Mellencamp R.O.C.K.'d Richmond!!!
The documentary captured what had been fascinating and haunting at the same time. Each track was recorded at old recording studios which lingered while he sang and still had the presence of former musicians. What the film had documented was a little shy of one hour, showcasing him and his band on the road recording his latest album. He recorded this album on breaks between shows while touring with Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson in 2009. The Jack Wharff Band's "opening act" was absolutely amazing!
Rockin' in his button-down black capped sleeve shirt and a midnight blue suit with fabric very reminiscent of Thai silk, "Johnny Cougar" opened the show. The show ended with Jack & Diane and R.O.C.K. in the USA, with Authority Song kicking off the performance. He performed all of his new 13 songs throughout the entire concert, weaving through some old favorites like Small Town, Cherry Bomb, and Pink Houses as well. The sound quality in the venue was perfect, and most of his new songs performed acoustically sounded amazing. His bandmates were just as awesome.
Towards the end of the night, I found myself asking, "Where do these guys do it, and how does all of the adrenaline come from?" They went through the entire show without any breaks, with Mellencamp jammin' while the band had breaks here and there. He definitely did R.O.C.K. the stage in this somewhat Small Town of Richmond.
